9 Quirky Corners of the Melbourne Studio

TPS Melbourne has spent the last year housing some of our most creative photo shoots and launching the careers of some amazing new faces. Home to our top photographers, makeup artists and the rest of the TPS team; the Melbourne studio has a plethora of cool spaces perfect for jazzing up a photo shoot. We walked around the studio with North, TPS Owner and Director, to hear all about the quirky features of the studio. Napier Street Windows

Huge windows beaming in natural light create the perfect backdrop for soft, well-lit photos. When North first started renovating the warehouse, these windows were made of frosted glass, so to maximise the potential of the windows, he swapped the frosted glass for clear panes to reveal lush green trees and a quirky 100 year old sign on the building next door that reads, “Salvation Army Citadel”. The perfect space to shoot your natural light filled photos.

Soft Textured Wall

North took inspiration from photographer great, Irving Penn, who famously shot on a modeled canvas like this one. The art of the canvas wall has become a generational thing for our studios with each photographer passing on the talent of creating the DIY wall from one to another.

Wood Grain Wall

This wood grain wall adds great texture in photos and North found it provided the ultimate vintage backdrop. This 60’s inspired shoot in front of the wood grain wall adds great richness and texture to a photograph whilst still looking authentic and fun.

Industrial Corner

This corner of the studio was a big project for North and the team. It was built in order to have an urban, rustic and edgy feel. There is clip lock metal, corrugated iron and a series of huge industrial props hand selected from the scrap yard. The huge metal doors were etched with acid, a process so noxious it’s a wonder they all survived! Now the industrial corner provides the ultimate cool corner for a variety of shoots.

The Timber Wall

This timber wall may look like it’s been thrown together, but in actual fact each piece of timber was hand picked and arranged precisely to create the perfect backdrop.

The Double Cyclorama

Of course no photography studio is complete without a white painted cyclorama perfect to dress up or down for a true studio feel. With a variety of drop down colours, this studio space has extreme versatility.

Coloured Backdrops

The studio has a variety of different coloured backdrops that can be wound down and played around with to create the right look for each model. Whether you want fun and playful or dark and mysterious, we can create the setting with these coloured backdrops.

The Stage

To make the most of the industrial windows on the Hertford Street side of the studio, North built a mini raised platform ‘the stage’ so that the light hits the models in exactly the right places.

The Ktena Wall

Our studio was once ‘The Ktena Knitting Mills’, a knitting factory with over eighty staff manufacturing thermal underwear. When The Photo Studio adopted this building, North found a huge room filled with old sewing patterns from the different garments that were brought to life in this factory. To stay true to the building’s heritage, they are now hanging in abundance on the wall behind one of the original sewing machines.
