All You Need To Know About Beauty Modelling

When I think about modelling, the first thing that springs to mind is Victoria’s Secret Angels strutting down the runway with their flashy wings and pretty lingerie. Like myself, not a lot of people is familiar with beauty modelling, and this needs to change. For one, there is no height restrictions in the beauty industry. Every shape and size is welcomed. It is perhaps the most inclusive type of modelling out there, so if you’re interested in becoming a model, this might be an option you’d want to explore!

Let’s start with the basics: What is beauty modelling?

Beauty modelling is all about flaunting your facial features to promote a product.

It’s what you see displayed in a skincare ad or a cosmetics campaign: close-ups of the alluring Cara Delevingne sporting Dior’s hot pink lipstick and the ethereal make-up free Chloe Moretz for SK-II.

Beauty modelling is meant to prove that a product not only promises radiant complexion or long lustrous lashes your friends would envy—it delivers.

As such, beauty falls under the umbrella of commercial modelling.

Like any other modelling know-hows, what you need is a killer portfolio. Feature impressive headshots that accentuate your uniqueness and versatility. Don different kinds of looks, from natural to edgy. Show that you’ve got what it takes to break into beauty modelling.

The next step is to just get your face out there! Volunteer to be the make-up model for beauty schools. Attend MAC, Avon, and Mecca’s casting call. Build your social media presence and curate your feed so it shows off your flair for modelling.

The more you put yourself out there, the higher your chances of getting scouted by an agency with big connections in the beauty industry!

What is expected from beauty models?

Versatile facial expressions

In a lot of ways, beauty modelling can be trickier to master due to its penchant for close-ups. You can no longer rely on your knack for striking flexible poses. You need to deliver different kinds of emotions through your face and your face only. Having versatile facial expressions is indeed key.

The good news is, you don’t have to be born with chameleon-like acting skills to be able to portray all fifty shades of the emotional spectrum. You can develop this ability with practice.

Stand in front of a mirror. Smile until you yourself are convinced that you are joyful inside and out. Pull off the kind of pensive, poignant expression you see on fragrance ads—so often that you can do it on cue. Practice sultry poses and settle with the ones that are guaranteed head-turners.

Maintain a healthy routine

Close-ups are great at enhancing your natural beauty, but they also pick up the slightest hint of fatigue you wish were not visible on camera. Which is why it is important to invest in a sensible routine that makes sure you glow like no other.

Keep your skin hydrated, your lips smooth, and your hair healthy. Arrive at your photo shoots with groomed eyebrows and a pampered face. Tiny little details like these may seem insignificant, but they go a long way during and after the photo shoot.

In fact, a renowned photographer said to masterbeautyphotography.com that if a model had taken care of their peach fuzz before their photo shoot, it would have saved her hours of retouching.

Beauty models often hold up the products they’re plugging. So make sure the skin on your hands is healthy too. A little manicure every now and then never hurts.
