Men’s Grooming Guide: Show Up Sharp, Own the Camera

At The Photo Studio, we want you to look and feel your best in front of the camera. Unlike our female shoots that include a full glam team, our men’s sessions don’t come with hair and makeup—so it’s important to arrive at the studio already groomed and ready to go. A little prep goes a long way so whether you’re here for a modelling portfolio or just to capture your best self, follow these easy grooming tips to walk in camera-ready.

1. Skincare: Fresh Face, No Filter

Clear, smooth skin starts with a small effort. Moisturize morning and night in the days leading up to your shoot to keep your skin hydrated.

Exfoliating gently once or twice before the session helps remove dead skin cells for a fresh, even complexion—but avoid trying new products right before your session to prevent irritation.

Drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep will also keep your skin looking its best.

2. Hair: Keep it Sharp

A fresh cut looks great, but timing is key. Get your haircut one to two weeks before your shoot so it looks natural, not too freshly trimmed. If you’re thinking of a new style, test it out well in advance.

On shoot day, style your hair as you normally would—keep it clean and use appropriate amount of product to keep it in place. A natural, polished look is always best on camera.

3. Facial Hair: Neat and Intentional

Your facial hair should complement your look. If you prefer a clean-shaven appearance, shave the morning of your shoot using a sharp razor and a good shaving cream to minimize irritation. A smooth, even shave will always look fresh in photos!

If you have a beard or stubble, make sure it’s neatly trimmed and shaped. Pay attention to stray hairs along your neckline and cheeks and use a beard oil or balm to keep it looking healthy.

4. Eyebrows, Nails, and Small Details

Grooming doesn’t stop at hair and skin—tidy eyebrows subtly enhance your face, so trim any stray hairs for a clean look. Keep your nails short and clean since they’ll show up in your photos.

Check for stray hairs on your nose, ears, and neckline, giving them a quick trim to stay sharp.

5. Dress to Impress

Your wardrobe matters just as much as your grooming. Have a few extra casual and polished outfits on hand —to show different sides of your personality. Layering works well on camera, so consider adding a blazer, jacket, or overshirt for depth.

Mixing textures like denim, wool, or leather helps your outfit stand out, and simple accessories like a sleek watch or sunglasses can elevate your look without being distracting. Above all, make sure your clothes are clean, ironed, and wrinkle-free.

Confidence is Your Best Look

At the end of the day, confidence is what truly makes a great photo. When you arrive well-groomed and prepared, you’ll feel more relaxed and ready to own the moment. Stick to what makes you comfortable, show up looking sharp, and most importantly—enjoy the experience. Our team will guide you through the shoot, helping you capture your best self.
