Model Success Story | Amy Hill
“I first started out when the owner of Royalle put out a calling for a charity runway show for Whitehouse Institute of Design. I expressed my initial interest and ended up being chosen for the show, while also told that if they liked what they saw, I could potentially be signed. I think after that I practiced a million times during rehearsals to make sure everything was perfect and eventually they signed me.”
Amy is ambitious, goal-driven and makes sure she always presents her best work.
“Now that I’m with an agency, I want to be the best model I can be and continue pushing myself each day to be better than yesterday. I hope to one day model for brands like Alexander Wang and Balmain because I love their garments, they’re so empowering and I’m all about that Alpha Female look.”
Amy already had some modelling jobs such as working with Wollongong based design label called Stepanova. She was even featured in Vogue China, wearing one of her gowns!
However, Amy agrees that it can be challenging to fully financially support yourself as a model, particularly in the beginning of your career, so she also has a regular job on the side.
“I work in hospitality and sometimes it’s difficult swapping between my job and modelling , even more so if there’s a last minute job. I’m very grateful that my boss took the time to understand just how passionate I am about modelling and wanting to make it in the industry so most of the time I am able to swap a shift with someone. I am also really lucky in the sense that my parents are all for me giving this a solid try and they understand everything that comes along with it, so if I do become desperate they loan me small amounts of money.”
It’s also no secret that being part of the modelling industry has its challenges and Amy already faced some for herself.
“I find that there are many people that want to take advantage of you, like expecting you to do commercial shoots for free with promises of exposure, which often isn’t the case. Also, when you’re just starting out, you don’t always know who has the best intentions. That’s why it’s so great being with an agency because they’re always helping me to choose the right path.”
Amy believes it’s very important to have the right team around you, whom you can trust while also being free to express yourself.
“When I did a shoot at The Photo Studio, it helped me to see the kind of people I want to work with in the future. Working with such an amazing team really raised my standards and expectations that now I only choose to work with those who can meet or exceed them.”
For aspiring models, Amy advises to never give up and keep working hard.
“There’s always someone out there that will look at you and absolutely love what the see. There is definitely a spot for everyone in the modelling industry, you just have to persevere and keep doing your best. Never settle for less or below average when it comes to who you work with or the photos you get.”
