5 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Modelling

When I started modelling I knew absolutely nothing about the ins and outs of the industry.

What you see on Instagram, magazines, and television doesn’t give you an idea of what it’s actually like to work behind the scenes. In reality, there is more that goes into modelling than meets the eye. If you are thinking to start your modelling journey, here are the 5 things you need to know.

1. There Are No Promises

Even if you’re signed to an agency, it doesn’t mean you are guaranteed work.

Expect highs and lows in the amount of work you will receive, however, commitment and perseverance are the keys to success.

It is easy to want to give up quickly when you don’t see immediate results. Modelling is time-consuming and requires patience and sacrifice. It is a long process, but it will be worth it in the end.

2. It is A Big Investment

It might take a while until your first big paycheck, not to mention there are even more additional costs on top of that.

From building a portfolio, buying clothes, skincare and travelling to castings, being a model is an investment.

Modelling is an exciting career, but your income can fluctuate from month to month.

3. Rejection is Inevitable

Even the most beautiful and famous models get rejected, so don’t let it affect you.

Agencies usually only sign models that match their criteria and style.

If you get rejected, that doesn’t mean you’re not good enough. It is usually for the best for both parties if you get signed with agencies that you are suitable for.

It’s never personal.

4. Rather Be Over Prepared Than Under Prepared

No matter if you’re doing a shoot with a big studio, freelance photographer or model agency, always do your research.

It is not a bad thing to learn about the background and previous work of those you’re working with.

Finding out about their style opens you up to an easier and more relaxed photo shoot.

5. Opportunities Don’t Just Come To You

It’s important to actively seek opportunities in the modelling industry.

Open yourself up to different possibilities.

Don’t expect to receive your big runway gig by waiting for it to come to you. Put yourself up for work in different areas to increase exposure.

Accumulate experience and knowledge to sculpt an all-rounded portfolio.

At the end of the day, modelling is an enjoyable experience that is worth the effort and hard work required. So go out there and take the first steps to unleashing the star qualities within you!
