Every day when my phone alarm rings, I feel like I’ve won the jackpot. I moved to the other side of the world to pursue my dreams and ended up in the most amazing city. I work with a group of ultimate babes in a cool Fitzroy studio where I’m surrounded by constant giggles and my colleagues ride past me on skateboards!

Day to day, I’m very much a behind the scenes type of girl, dabbling in just about anything content marketing related. ‘Leave the modelling to the clients’ was always my view. So when one day they dropped the bombshell that little old me was going to have to do my own photo shoot, I nearly laid an egg! Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a sneaky little pose on holiday or before a night out; but a makeover, wardrobe styling and two-hour photo shoot was pushing my comfort zone a little too far! It didn’t feel like something that ‘everyday me’ would do.

I soon realised there was no way of backing down – my staff shoot was now referred to as “training”. I had no choice but to suck it up and go with it. So I headed to Pinterest for inspiration and settled for a 60’s relaxed bedroom style shoot. I spent the week before fretting about all the things that could possibly go wrong in a two-hour time frame. After a call with the stylist, I pulled together a selection of my wardrobe and headed to the studio for a day all about ME.

Head makeup artist MJ was assigned to work miracles. Being a fellow Brit, we basically just reminisced about tea and scones for an hour and by the time I looked back in the mirror at the transformation, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Huge bouncy curls, massive lashes and dewy skin was looking back at me. I hate to admit it, but I was impressed.

I sank a glass of Champagne in record time to calm my jitters and headed over to the cyclorama to start my shoot with James. After approximately 3 seconds of being in his company, my nerves were settled. He demonstrated every awkward and over the top pose he wanted me to execute, taking all the embarrassment out of it. We both looked like idiots together. Four outfit changes, a dozen studio sets and countless makeup touch-ups later, I was left psyched up and absolutely buzzing! Each glimpse of my images straight from the camera gave me so much more confidence. “That’s actually me?!” was shouted at least 15 times.

If it made one thing clear, it’s that I should take every opportunity that’s thrown at me. Despite my initial hesitation and undeniable nerves, the experience was amazing. A new side of me came out that day which I have never seen before. A confident, outgoing and playful side. It taught me a lot, but one thing above all! Life definitely begins at the end of your comfort zone.
