Not All Heroes Wear Capes

Sophie hasn’t let the disorder prevent her moving mountains and she certainly hasn’t let it stop her from pursuing her dreams.

When Sophie was seven, she was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia, a genetic disorder that affects the nervous system causing muscle weakness and heart failure.  Sophie’s brother tragically passed away from the same condition at the age of 19.

Dealing with Friedreich’s Ataxia makes day-to-day life hard. It affects the mind and body in ways that dramatically impact ones confidence and self-love. But Sophie hasn’t let the disorder prevent her moving mountains and she certainly hasn’t let it stop her from pursuing her dreams.

Sophie’s mum was a fashion model back in the 70’s and ever since Sophie can remember she has dreamed of following her mother’s footsteps. With Sophie’s condition, however, she has never had the opportunity to pursue modelling.

After hearing about Sophie’s story through the Love Your Curves campaign, we invited her into the studio for a complimentary photo shoot and 10-page portfolio. We wanted to make Sophie’s dreams come true and show others that no matter how hard you get hit in life, you can always pick yourself up.

Sophie is our hero because of her strength, determination and courage to carry on. She is a prime example that anything can be overcome and that there is no better time to follow your dreams than now.

“This was an incredible opportunity and I am so thankful that I was able to do this and share my story. I really hope I can inspire just one person and show people that people with disabilities can do anything. I never really thought I’d be able to model myself but I’ve got one photoshoot under my belt now! I have struggled a whole lot throughout my life and I have wanted to and tried to give up but I’m still here and thank god I am because things can get so much better if you hold on. Don’t ever give up. ❤”
