Mara came in to do a photoshoot with us to develop a modelling portfolio. She is 19 years old and has a background in dancing. Her dream is to get involved in modelling professionally, if the opportunity arises. Beyond fashion, Mara says her ‘passion lies in meeting new people and experiencing new things, whether that be through university, travelling or employment’. She is currently studying Interior Design at university.
Mara’s style inspiration comes from individuals with contrasting styles. She says that she loves the elegance and beauty of Audrey Hepburn, however she relates more to Jennifer Anniston’s character Rachel from Friends, who wears high waisted jeans and cropped sweaters. Mara loves second hand clothing, as there is always an opportunity to find pieces of clothing that are ‘unique, special or unusual’. Her wardrobe consists of a range of different colours, patterns and materials so she can mix up her style day to day. She often opts for comfortably chic clothing, explaining that most of the time you’ll see her sporting an oversized jumper and trackies. When choosing clothes for the shoot, Mara decided on pieces she knew suited her and that she felt comfortable in.
When reflecting on her photo shoot, Mara emphasized how awestruck she was by the undeniable sense of confidence which is conveyed through her photos. She describes herself as quite a shy person, and so when she first looked at the photos from her shoot where she was looking fierce, strong and confident she couldn’t help but exclaim, ‘is that really me?!’
Mara had 2 key looks for her shoot: Activewear and Casual. For both looks she chose an effortless, natural makeup look with bronze-gold eyeshadow to accentuate her eyes. She also wore her hair in soft, breezy curls for both looks. For her Activewear look Mara sported a monochrome black look: a sports bra with running tights and running shoes. We love how Activewear allows for movement in photos but can still look high end like in Mara’s shoot, when paired with excellent lighting and a skilled photographer. For her casual look, Mara wore high waisted mom-style jeans, reminiscent of 90s era fashion. She paired these with a floral cropped singlet, a cropped mustard turtleneck jumper and a leather jacket which she threw over shoulder during some shots. Mara shows us that leather jackets don’t just have to be a piece of clothing – they can be used as a prop in shoots to add extra interest to photos.
Mara hopes to live her life by taking chances and saying yes to new opportunities that come her way. If these opportunities involve modelling in the future, she hopes to use her platform to make a positive difference in people’s lives, and we love the sound of that!
