What is your most prized possession?
A silver engraved bangle my Mama bought me when I was about 18. She bought it from a lady in York back home in the UK and it reads the latin phrase ‘illegitimis nil carborundum’, which translate to ‘Don’t let the bastards grind you down’, something that my Mum has always drilled into me! She also bought a ring that read ‘Nulli Secundus’, meaning ‘Second to None’ and had it cut down the middle so both of us had a half each. I was gutted when I realised I had left it in the drawer of a hotel room after my ex-boyfriend rushed me out. I guess that solidly relates to the phrase on the bangle!
If you could live in any past decade which one would it be and why?
Tough one… but I do love the freedom of the 60’s and can’t deny the cliché of wanting to do a naked lap around Andy Warhol’s Factory.
How does fashion help self-expression?
I am a big believer that you don’t have to have wads of cash or be the owner of a pristine new Prada to be on point with style. To have $20 in your pocket and be able to thrift together an amazing outfit is far more creative. I also prefer the word style over fashion, to me it sounds less shallow. Style comes from within, and it is up to you how you wear yourself on the outside. Style is mood changing, unique, imaginative and empowering. Don’t be a sheep and follow the crowd – break the rules and be your own trend setter. By all means, take on a trend but be daring enough to wear it your own way, not how popular culture tells you to. Style is yours and you have the right to express yourself through it however you want to. Iris Apfel is a style veteran sent from heaven.
Where would we find you on your days off?
I’m a bit of a home bird in the Winter and love curling up on the sofa or taking a stroll around the park with my boyfriend and British Bulldog Sonny. Come Summer, you can find me roaming the streets taking in the art, at festivals, gigs, beer gardens, garage sales, the beach, exhibitions and the like.
Would you rather live one life that lasts 1000 years or live 10 lives that last 100 years each?
Most certainly 10 lives that last 100 years. Every next level of your life demands a different version of you and I would love to experience that from a different perspective every 100 years.
Who is your biggest influence in life?
My ma, for sure. I believe she is one of the strongest people to walk the planet and has taught me to take life as it comes, to roll with the punches, but to always try and see the positive in everything. When it comes to BS, she simply will not put up with it. People respect her and she inspires me in so many ways. She taught me to connect with people on a level of respect, but most of all to respect myself. My mum (AKA Kez!) is a born leader and is proof you don’t have to live within the ideologies of societies, but to live life the way you choose, know your worth and stick the V’s to anyone who disapproves. Kez always said life is too short, you just need to enjoy the time you have, to pick yourself up when you’re having it hard, put on your best lipstick and own every god damn path you ever have the pleasure of strutting down. Big up Kez, you are a true Queen.
If you had 3 wishes what would they be?
I am way too much of an erratic and indecisive person to answer this one, I’m sorry.
What’s the one fashion faux pas you can’t stand?
Pleather leggings. Just leave.
What fashion trend are you loving right now?
As a stylist, it’s probably very wrong of me to say that for me personally, I am not a massive follower of trends, but I’m going to go against the grain anyway. I prefer to dress for me, not what’s in the latest pages of the magazines right now. I really enjoy seeing people reworking an old trend to create something brand new again, doing a 360. But in terms of the fashion world, I am really big on the all khaki look at the moment, and chokers are STILL slaying it (will they EVER die?) Furry sliders are going to explode this season, so keep your peepers peeled and accessorize with stick on diamante’s and badges. Keep an out for those.
